Critique of Pure Nature

Simona Stano’s new book, Critique of Pure Nature (Springer 2023)

Given the crucial role played by the concept of “nature” in contemporary discourses, Simona Stano’s new book, Critique of Pure Nature (Springer 2023), carefully scrutinizes it, combining an interdisciplinary theoretical reflection with the semiotic analysis of particularly relevant cases anging from the iconography of Mother Nature between the past and the present to the representation of catastrophic events, from “clean eating” and other contemporary food trends to the multiple meanings and values attributed to nudity over time and its provocative use in different contexts. The volume thus promotes a critique of “Pure Nature”, that is, a systematic study of the way in which particular meanings and values, as well as specific forms and expressive configurations, are attributed to nature in a series of texts, discourses and practices that are of particular relevance in contemporary societies, illustrating in conclusion a possible path towards an “internatural turn”.
